  • What does a team consist of?

During competition, a mix of 7 ground-and air-based vehicles are piloted simultaniously, as such it is not recommended to have less than 7 students on a team, nor more than 15. Teams should have the support of instructors or advisors.

  • What equipment is needed?

Our kit that is included in the New Team Registration includes everything you need to get started - 3 Sphero Mini robots, 1 Sphero RVR, and the build kits and manuals for the DEXI drone and AVR drone. It also includes the transmitters for both drones.

In addition to the kit, teams will also need a computer, access to a 3D printer, and devices (such as tablets or phones) to operate the ground-based vehicles.

  • What skills does the AVR competition target?

The AVR competition combines a variety of skills into two parts:

    • The presentation.
    • The mission.

The presentation is an opportunity for students to use graphic design, written & spoken word to explain to the judges how they work cohesively as a team, and to detail their problem solving, planning, engineering, and manufacturing to a panel of judges.

The mission shifts each year according to industry standards and insight. Students solve real-world problems by completing several tasks with each uncrewed vehicle - sometimes autonomously, and sometimes by piloting manually.

Students will build, program, and fly their own drones. They will design and create custom payloads to preform tasks. They will use CAD, and utilize code in languages such as Python and C++. And they will work together as a team to complete challenges.

  • When do events occur?

The official gameplay manual and rulebook are released to teams in August. The Championship is held in December, with Qualifying Events on the weekends prior. Dates vary by year.

Throughout the rest of the year, we will send out hints and breadcrumbs to reveal parts of the year's mission!
